DIRTY BEACHES CAN BE A GOOD THING TOO

Album I downloaded twice because I didn't listen to it the first time.  Dirty Beaches is Alex Zhang Hungtai of Canada.  He's on ZooMusic and touring with the Dum Dum Girls now.  He's already played shows with some stellar bands like No Joy, Best Coast, and Sonny and the Sunsets.

"The concept behind Badlands, is about a man who is possessed by the road. My mother used to say to me, "you walk at night often enough, sooner or later you'll run into a ghost." I think its very true, as the devil comes in all forms. Just here to fuck your shit up."

ELEPHANTS AT THE DOOR

Silly name, good music.  Described by The Needle Drop as "Flying Lotus’s Cosmogramma from a psych rock perspective."  I tend to agree.  The band is also trying out this 'PAYWITHATWEET.COM' idea, which could be great, except what if you don't want to tweet about a band that you haven't heard yet?  Still have some kinks to work out, but I'll assure you this one is worth the "blind tweet."

TUNE-YARDS RELEASE NEW TRACK: BIZNESS

WHO THE FUCK REPORTED THIS POST TO CHILLING EFFECTS?  YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE SONG FROM PITCHFORK ASSHOLES.

Indie DIY-er Merrill Garbus (a.k.a. tUnE-yArDs) has released the first track off of her upcoming second LP, 'w h o k i l l'.  The track is titled Bizness and... yeah, it's trippy good.  Garbus' powerful voice yet again carries the track from start to finish, but it's the added level of production value that is immediately apparent here; bad news for lo-fi purists but good news for all of us who wondered what she could do outside of the bedroom "recording studio" used for 'BiRd BrAiNs.'  Get it here and anticipate the new album April 19th (just in time for the holiday.)

10 QUESTIONS WITH: YALL

Denton/Austin based noise/math-rock duo YALL have released a wonderfully refreshing 7-song EP titled 'Drink From Between Our Hair.'  Members Travis and Andy display terrific musicianship on drums and guitar, and on the couple songs that vocals are used, they only serve to emphasize the emotional swell that their songs build to.  But I really expect nothing less from a band that was already named "...artist of the year," according to the awards section of their facebook page (and who can argue with facebook?)
Here are a few quotes that I would use to describe YALL:
"the biggest sounding duo around"
"two bros kickin ass and not givin a shit about names of victims"
"rejoice, math and Texas can now be used in the same sentence"
"current front-runner for TonsMoreCowbell's best new artist"

Some answers from guitarist Travis Franklin, preceded by questions (10 to be exact)...

1. Names/instruments played?
-Travis Franklin- Guitar        Andy Richardson- Drums

2. How long have you gents known each other?
-We have actually known each other since first grade. We went to school together all the way through high school. We are 19 now so that is about 12 or 13 years.

3. Can i assume that you've played live around austin for a while? where did this/didn't this occur?
-We started YALL this past summer and played a few shows here and there before Andy moved to Sacramento. Andy just moved back to Austin about 2 months ago and we recorded Drink From Between Our Hair. We played a few shows here and there. We played at Trailer Space and Starco and a party in Denton. We also have some more shows coming up soon, one being during SXSW. The amount we get to play is limited by the fact that I currently live and go to school in Denton. We are trying to make it work though and it is going fairly well.

4. What are your impressions of the Austin music scene as a band trying to build a following?
-The Austin music scene is both good and bad. It is great that there is such a variety of bands and musicians, and so many places to play at but at the same time, the overwhelming amount of local bands makes it somewhat difficult to stand out at all. There aren't too many bands in Austin that play the type of music we are into though. There are tons of hardcore bands mostly.

5. How did you come up with the band name?  was this an intentional effort to be 'un-google-able'?
-We chose the name YALL mostly because we thought it was funny. It wasn't intentional to be 'un-google-able'. I actually feel like it is somewhat of a setback. It would be nice to tell people to just google us and that they'll be able to find something on us. Instead we have to be a bit more specific, which isn't so bad.

6. It's pretty apparent that at most times there are more than two people playing on 'Drink From Between Our Hair'.  Is this another unwarranted assumption or did you guys have some homies join in for the recording?
-Actually the entire album is just us two. Andy did drums and I did guitar work and those are really the only two instruments incorporated. On all of the songs we did double-track the guitar to give a fuller sound, which is probably why it sounds like more than just us. We did multiple vocal tracks as well so it would sound like more people.

7. Who did the bad ass watercolor cover art?
-Our good friend John Ballejo did the artwork. We love his artwork and he has done artwork for old bands of ours and such. He doesn't have any kind of website but anyone who is interested in anymore of his stuff can add him on facebook and talk to him here: http://www.facebook.com/PUNCHYURMOMMA

8. Who would you guys like to tour with?
-I am going to take this question in an idealist way. Some of our biggest influences are bands like Lightning Bolt, Hella, Don Caballero, Melt Banana, Ruins, Boredoms, Meneguar and of course Planets. So touring with any of those bands would be a dream come true for us.

9. Any new favorite bands?
-Lately I have been listening to a whole lot of J-Pop like Perfume and Silver Forest. I also found this Japanese band called Mutyumu and their album Ilya is absolutely amazing.

10. Frisbee golf... yea or nay?
-Frisbee Golf... definitely.

No website currently, but you can get in touch with YALL through their facbook page.
YALL is with Trembleface/Sanddagger, a label that gives all of their digital albums away for free.

GRAMMY LOGO HAS BLATANT ILLUMINATI SYMBOLISM/ARCADE FIRE WINS BEST ALBUM

They have the two "A's" in the middle falling over so that they opening in the top letter sits perfectly over the bottom.  What else would we expect from a network with an 'all-seeing eye' for a logo?

In other news...
Arcade Fire wins best album.  Kanye West was not even nominated for best rap album.  Pitchfork with another bold mis-step.  I picked them at #2, but that's just because of an extreme prejudice to Tame Impala's dream-psych bliss.  Overall, I saw some promise from the show in general.

SOME WISE WORDS FROM THE MANLY DEEDS

Well you give someone a birdcage, eventually they'll buy a bird.
Well you give someone a birdcage, eventually they'll buy a bird.
And that bird will get to singin' the prettiest songs you've ever heard.

You give someone a gun rack, eventually they'll buy a gun.
Yeah if you give someone a gun rack, eventually they'll buy a gun.
When they get some ammunition for it, well they're bound to kill someone.

Well you give someone two verses, eventually they'll write a third.
Well you give someone two verses, eventually they'll write a third.
And they'll pick up their guitar, and use the gun to shoot the bird.

Then if you give someone a handbasket, eventually they'll go to hell.
Well you give someone a handbasket, eventually they'll go to hell.
There's a chance they'll go to heaven , but there ain't no heaven...
At least as far as I can tell.

BEST VERSION OF WHAT I COULD IMAGINE JUST HAPPENED

I love it when TMCB originals come out with new material.  The bands that inspired me to start the blog will always hold a special place in my internetheart.
Listen carefully and you can tell this is a different version of the TMCB #21 song of 2010 from Seattle-based Beat Connection.  Includes two remixes by Young Montana? and Dreamtrak Diamond Sound along with a new jam called 'Space Vacation' that leads me to believe their follow up LP is going to be epic.

WTF?  Bill Baird is going to be playing with his band, Sunset, tonight at The Loft and they aren't headlining?  What's more?  They're opening.   I guess the new-found buzz fame of Smith Westerns and Yuck is enough to surpass a 6+ CD back-catalog of brilliance.   Everyone better show up early tonight and support one of the best Texas bands ever!

BONUS GOLD FROM JASON THE SWAMP

As a follow up to yesterday's post, here's a bonus EP that Jason the Swamp was generous enough to post for free today.  You want this.  Trust me.

'More Things is an EP that collects music recorded soon after the release of debut LP, "Things". It was originally released in 2008 as a full-length oddities album with too many songs that I now consider to be "filler". This is an updated, streamlined, 8 track EP with new artwork and some slight volume adjustments. Enjoy.'

TEN QUESTIONS WITH: JASON THE SWAMP/HUGGING

I did something I thought I would never do today.  I joined myspace.  Not by choice, but by necessity (damn)  and although I was propositioned by some type of hooker-thief-woman about 10 minutes into my journey, the messages eventually leveled off and my true purpose was realized.

After several hours spent trying to find an artist with a side-project known only as 'hugging' I gave up a couple months ago.  As I was listening to the album (one of TMCB's '20 more albums you should have heard' from 2010) again today, I once more became determined to track down the source.  You can imagine how hard it is to find an artist with the name of 'hugging' without getting some really really questionable results in google.  It turns out, I could have just added an extra 'G' to the end of the name and searched myspace, because it would have been that easy.  Shortly after looking at the artist's myspace, facebook and tumblr, (all of which I do not have) I realized that there was no email address and no way to get in contact with him unless I joined one of them.  I thought myspace was the best choice because nobody uses it anymore, thus making it truly indie.

After I emailed Jason through his hugging page, I began to look around the bandcamp for his main project, Jason the Swamp, and all I can say is WOW!!!  I've really been missing out...

As Is the Sun [Bonus Tracks] Cover Art
Jason the Swamp - As Is The Sun - 2009
As described on the bandcamp, 'As Is the Sun' is a concept album about being alone in a wilderness.

I've also been wanting to institute a new TMCB mainstay by starting a '10 qustions with...' section with artists that I want to get to know and want to support.  I think this is the best time to start... with the formerly mysterious figure behind: hugging.

1. Name, place of birth, zodiac sign?
-Jason Aud, Maryland, I was a gemini, but now I'm a taurus.

2. Best new band you've heard recently?
-About  a week ago I stumbled upon this band called Mean Wind that has a few free releases on bandcamp. They have a sound that interests me.
(Side note: this is awesome stuff, they have free mediafire links on each page and TMCB will be posting more about Mean Wind soon.)

3. How long have you been recording music?
-I've been recording music since maybe 2005.  Not everything has been gold.

4. Do you have any other projects that you're working on right now?  If so, what are they? Short term plans for these?
-You know me for Hugging, but my main project is Jason The Swamp.  The Hugging album was really just a way to release some experiments in cutting up samples mostly found on the website UbuWeb.  I'm not sure at this point whether or not there will be another Hugging album, but I like that the name is there for the next time I make something on the more experimental side.  I'm currently trying to finish college and working on the next Jason The Swamp album.  I also play mandolin in an old-time folk band called The Manly Deeds.

5. What did you do yesterday?
-Ate a burrito.

6. Do you watch/read the news?  If so, where do you go?
-I'll watch the nightly news on tv every once in a while, but other than that I don't keep up too much.

7. If you could live in any place, where would it be?
-I'd like to see more of America before making a decision like that.  I've been on the east coast all of my life.

8.  Worst job you've ever had?
-I worked at a burrito place for a few years, but it wasn't too bad

9. What was your best subject in school? (music classes generally excluded)
-Art.  I've also done well in and generally enjoy history classes.

10. Touring plans?-I really have no live show for any of my projects aside from The Manly Deeds.  We play a couple shows every month around Baltimore and we plan on recording our first full-length in about a month.

THE SUPER BOWL DEBACLE

Super Bowl fortyV is a bust.  None of the people from Green Bay or Pittsburgh have given me any money like the news said they would and it's colder than a witch's-titty-in-a-brass-bra outside... I think they should have just tried to reschedule it to some time in early March but I guess nobody wants to do the obvious thing.

I've been snowed and iced in for the last 3 days and tonight I'm missing a Baths w/ Braids show that's guaranteed to be rewarding for everyone who shows up.  Whilst this is the saddest day of my week, it shall be the grandest day for the TMCB faithful.

My friend Samuel over at Debacle records recently sent me some new rec's, in turn, I spent a few more hours of my own crawling around their Bandcamp and getting lost in the endless amounts of mind-altering music.

Konntinent is Antony Harrison of London, and he's coming for your bitches.  No, I don't really know his stance on bitches, but I do know that he can probably make bitches bounce with the Massive-Atack style ambient electronic doomwave beats he's been dropping all over that drab isle.
Recorded as a single take live improvisation for an OTObahn show at London's Cafe Oto in November last year, later edited into a complete release via the power of Logic. Antony blends the crystalline tones and timbres of a dubstep producer with the kosmische approach of Rene Hell into a travelogue of a cold London.

Down With Candy Cover Art
Konntinent - Down With Candy - 2011

This is one that was just released this week and damn, this is hauntigly, soul-stirringly awesome experimental doom ambience.  Demian Johnston and Mink Stole have pieced together something that I predict will gather quite a bit of buzz, and I would be really interested in smoking a blunt and watching them play for a couple hours.   (As I'm listening to the last 2 songs of the album, my dog's starting to have some crazy dreams related to the music, eyes in the back of his head and speaking in tongues like a mini Linda Blair.  This is too awesome to make up.)

DRAGON WAGON

Jeff from one of my favorite blogs, The Noise Is, posted the new video from Young Mammals of Houston a few days ago and I feel the need to re-post it.   The video is for their song 'Dragon Wagon' from the brilliant album, Carrots (TMCB's #10 album of 2010.)  No over-produced, over-thought concepts here, just a good band playing good music.  Could have been shot in one take for all I know.

Check it:

TMCB has been slow to update due to the fact that I moved this week and have been without any of the internets.  This should stop today.
